Gas Lines
Updated: 2 hours ago
Natural gas is a big energy source for homes in the Portland Metro area! NW Natural alone delivers to more than 785,000 homes and businesses. It is a great fuel source for appliances in your home including your Furnace, Water Heater, Dryer, Range, Fireplace Insert, etc.
In your home you will typically find two types of gas lines. A black iron gas line or a CSST gas line. Both gas lines are allowed to be used for your home with slightly different installation practices.
Black IRON
Black Iron gas lines are the standard gas line that still to this day supplies gas to both homes and commercial buildings. This gas pipe is made of mild carbon steel and uses NPT threaded fittings to connect the gas line through your home. You can identify this type of gas line by its rigid nature, typical black color. This gas line type has been around for over a 100 years and is still used and installed to this day. A typical lifespan can be between 40 and 80 years, depending on indoor and environment conditions. All black iron pipe exposed to the outdoors is painted gray to prevent corrosion from moisture and rain.

CSST Gas Line
CSST stands for Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing. This pipe is made up of a thin walled stainless steel flexible tube that is protected by a yellow or black exterior plastic coating. You can identify this pipe by its flexible nature and color. CSST was introduced into the Oregon market in the 1990s and early 2000s. This type of gas line uses brass fittings and typically requires a more careful installation. Rubber grommets and protective sleaves must be used when running this gas line through metal cabinets or materials that can damage or cut the tubing. CSST gas line must also be properly electrically bonded for most manufacturers to warranty their product.
